“I wouldn’t have your job…”
That’s one of the most-repeated phrases we hear from our Members,
very often as we lead them away from a difficult meeting with
officials in Brussels or Whitehall (and explain the nuances
of a change of position or emergence of potential new threat).
Our job, quite simply, is to monitor all proposals to change
your product or the way you market it and support it – by attending
meetings and scanning (literally) thousands of official and
lobbying documents a year. And to swing into action when we
see a threat – or, occasionally, an opportunity.
Sometimes we deal with the threat by swift action without involving
Members, although we report the results. Often, we need to
galvanise one of our committees or form a special working group.
Always, it requires hours of meetings involving grinding regulatory
or technical detail, supported by precise AMDEA documentation.
One thing is certain. Our Member companies couldn’t do this
work themselves, as even the largest of them is first to admit
it. Which is just as well – because we love our job!
