Eco Performance in Use (New)

How appliances perform in the home is vital to the aim of achieving net zero. As 80% of an appliance’s emissions are estimated to occur during the in use phase of a machine’s life, efficiency is key. Householders are always sensitive to domestic bills and place increasing emphasis on running costs when choosing an appliance. Smart Features help drive up appliance efficiency.

In use

Manufacturers strive continuously to reduce energy used by appliances.

Today’s fridge uses half the energy compared to 20 years ago, while washing machines nowadays use a third less water. Heat pump tumble dryers save more than half the energy used by traditional condenser dryers. Eco buttons on today’s dishwashers save over half the water and a quarter of the energy compared to an ordinary cycle.

LIGHT UP THE UK!

Replacing all the fridge freezers running in 2011 with today’s average models, would save enough energy to light up ALL the streets in the UK.

Today's fridge... ...uses 1/2 of the energy compared to 20 years ago
Heat pump tumble dryers... ...use a 1/3 of the energy of condenser dryers
Eco buttons... ...on today's dishwashers save over half the water and over 1/4 of the energy compared to an ordinary cycle
Today's washing machine... ... uses 1/3 less water than 15 years ago

Smart features

Smart appliances –internet and wifi connected – have further increased efficiency. This tech has many benefits and it saves time, energy and money; it lets the user control and monitor the appliance remotely and it also allows the machine to send alerts. Fridges can now ensure an owner knows what needs to be bought from the supermarket, and washing machines are able to ensure detergent dosage is correct for the load.  Importantly it supports automatic diagnostics programmes that alert to misuse or identify faults.

Maintenance

Members are keen to extend the lifespan of appliances and for users to get the most from their machines by looking after them well. A small amount of routine care keeps a machine running at its optimum and the industry funds campaigns to encourage households with expert tips and advice. But if the machine develops a fault, manufacturers maintain spare parts for at least a decade. Many members also have their own teams of specialist engineers. Certain repairs should always be carried out by qualified personnel with manufacturers’ specified parts.
